Yes, you really can tell the difference and it's all about personal preference. Best way to test it is neat or with a little tonic, then work out what you might add - normally lemon or lime, sometimes orange or apple or cucumber or cloves etc.

It doesn't come with tonic, but we always have a good supply of Fever Tree in the fridge.
