Sounds a bit like when Dubya said the US didn't need to import oil, they could get it from Mexico...Comment

The reason why some people regard it as stealing, to put it mildly, is the dishonesty that was involved in how the London government ensured that it would be England's to have. In the 1970s an economist wrote a report describing the likely wealth of the Scottish part of the North Sea Oil: he said there would be so much of it that an independent Scotland would have a GNP per head on a level with Switzerland's, and the hardest currency in Europe. Scotland's trading surplus with England would be "so large as to be embarassing".Originally posted by FlubsterHow can it still something it already owns. Of course that would be intolerable, so the UK government of the day classified the report as secret, for fear that it might persuade the Scots to vote for independence.
That's Scotland's real underlying economic situation vis-a-vis England. What actually happened is that English politicians lied so that England could get all that wealth and spend it.
Just don't tell me that England is subsidising Scotland, please.Comment
