Robert Peston: 'Parents - sell your homes to help children buy property'

The former BBC economics editor says one of his 'great anxieties' is the difficulty his children face getting on the ladder

He is one of the highest paid British journalists, whose recent move to ITV is thought to have come with a salary in the region of £400,000.

But Robert Peston has said that one of his "great anxieties" as a parent is the difficulty his sons face getting on to the housing ladder.

The former BBC economics editor, who last week quit to head up ITV's politics team, has suggested that parents should sell their homes and use the money to help their children to buy their own property.

No, we should stop foreign investment, tax BTL within an inch of break even, lock up our borders (that's for you DP), and tighten lending. Then house prices will fall and become affordable. Then, we put in place some tight lending rules, and keep them, to moderate price increases.

Tight lending rules mean hardly private buyers, especially first time buyers, will be able to obtain a mortgage and people will find it harder to sell properties and will therefore hang onto them, which will reduce supply and prop up prices. So in short, it's a great tactic to help maintain current prices
