Why not just pretend we are renewing Trident but in reality spend the money on housing and infrastructure projects? None of our enemies would ever be completely sure we didn't have them, so we would get the benefit of a deterrent for free.“The period of the disintegration of the European Union has begun. Because 90% of the cost is putting the subs out to sea for 40 years, which you would still have to do for a fake deterrent anyway.Originally posted by shaunbhoy View PostWhy not just pretend we are renewing Trident but in reality spend the money on housing and infrastructure projects? The actual nukes and missiles themselves are a small part of the cost.Comment

Unless the japs were stupid enough to announce to the world that despite having nukes, they would NEVER use them.Originally posted by EternalOptimist View PostYou have to realise, there has already been a nuclear war. It happened in 1945 when one side had the bomb and the other side did not. The side with the bomb decided, after some agonising, that better to nuke a city than lose a lot of citizen soldiers.
The only point of the deterrent is to make sure we are not on the receiving end of a similar decision.
If the japs had the bomb, and a means of delivering it, the yanks would never had dropped it on Hiroshima and NagasakiComment

What was that SciFi short story about the war on the moon which was 'won' by the Brits with about 3 missiles which they never fired, because the big players took each other out? I think it was Clarke or Asimov.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment
