Not much publicity about this but on Radio Four an economist was talking about the UK balance of payments. It shows a surplus every year but in fact it is not what is seems. Really the UK has been in trade deficit since 1997. The reason for showing a credit is that foreign companies are buying up UK assets while the UK is spending on foreign consumables. It is a bit like owing a house and not working but selling off you furniture, garden and garage to pay for your food and transport while saying how well off you are.
