Family members - how do they view you contracting?

Mine are a nightmare especially my old man. They just don't get why someone would want to only work for 3 months at a time, have no job security, no sick pay, no holiday pay, and work in different places.

Of course, I don't tell them how much I earn which might make them change their mind.

My old man, like I said, is the worse of the lot. He is 80 though. Still waiting for me to get a 'proper' job and stop 'messing around'.

My Dad hates it, but he worked for the same company for 35 years.
I couldn't imagine anyone doing that in this day and age.

I'm not the only contractor in my family and friends' group.

Our generations folks come from a "Job for life" mentality though.

Mine are OK with it as they've seen what's happened.

Mother in law is/was quite vocal saying I should have a "Permanent Job" as it's "More Secure", to "Support her Daughter".

Now I just politely explain I was made redundant 8 years ago, and have been contracting since with only 2 months out, she shuts up (which is always a good thing).

Aye. 40 years in a factory for my old man. Hated it he did.

When I told my Dad what I was on he started his own version of the Monty Python "in my day" sketch and now asks me at least twice a month what I'm on

Don't get it that bad lol. Having been made redundant 3 times in 10 years while permie it just hits home how crap the job security idea is.
