    ^ this

My choice would be something like a CLS 350 CDI. Bags of power, silky smooth 6 cylinder turbo diesel, 7 speed auto, lots of leather and gadgets. £12K ish should get one with reasonable miles and full service history.

Looks like I can get a decent Mondeo for 2.5-3k. Will post some pics when I get it.
If you are going the low cost Mondeo route (about £3K), look for the 2.2 TDCi (ideally Ghia X spec with leather) which is the most modern and powerful diesel in the MKII Mondeo (produced up to 2007).

This is the New Labour legacy - Bob infested austerity Britain. Highly trained IT specialists posting pictures of their "new" £3K Mondeo.

OP - assume you mean 530?

The only popular 350's are Mercedes Benz or special BMWs that have been modded.

I am a lover of the Volvo S60 D5 (5 cylinder diesel) as they blend in and do not put any of the senior managers noses out of joint. Volvo also have the best (comfortable) seats.

Very much depends on who and where you work plus park - a VW or Ford are fine commuting machines but the likes of BMW (5 series - avoid 7s) / Volvo (S60/80 or V70) / Mercedes C, E or CLS) with diesel engines and auto box are very pleasant motorway monotony cars. Sure Audis are just as good.

As with any preowned car - there is a degree of luck.

Has anyone noticed the similarities between the front, primarily the radiator, on the new Mondeos and Fiestas to the new Aston Martins? And just seen the new Focus, also similar...

A Focus econetic could be an alternative to the VW. But the Mazda 6 is pretty nice IMO.
