Why Nissan chose Sunderland for its Leaf electric vehicle - Telegraph

The Government's financial support was also a major factor in its decision to build the Leaf in Britain, as were its signals on building places for electric cars to be recharged.

The north-east's regional development agency has already announced a network of 619 charging points in its region will be ready by the start of next year, and this is an initiative that is unlikely to be left to just one part of the country. Nissan is particularly pleased that the Government has offered a subsidy of up to £5,000 from 2011 on the purchase of zero-emission vehicles, including the Leaf.

The motor industry as a whole in the UK is not that important, especially compared to the aerospace industry: Motor Industry - Commons Library Standard Note - UK Parliament

In 2012, the manufacture of motor vehicles contributed 10.4 billion to the UK economy,
around 1% of total output and 7% of manufacturing output.
The industry employed 129,000 people in Great Britain.
The number of vehicles produced in the UK fell rapidly during the recession, from 1.8 million
in 2007 to 1.1 million in 2009. Numbers have since had a partial recovery with 1.6 million
        vehicles produced in 2013.
Most UK vehicle production is for export markets, with 77% of the passenger cars produced
        in 2013 exported.
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.
