He was on £20,000 a week. I don't think he struggled on state aid for his defence.

It was a commercial decision why Oldham couldn't/wouldn't sign him - just like at Sheffield United, the organisations that provide the club with it's capital, capital the club cannot survive without, did not want a rapist that is still on licence representing the club that they are commercially linked to.

That said, it doesn't feel like a particularly unsafe conviction to me:

Really? The way I read it, it says that Evans said that she consented, and the girl says that she can't remember. How does the jury or anyone else know for sure that she didn't give consent, albeit whilst drunk? All they have to go on is Evans word against hers. Is drunken consent not consent? Is it up to Evans to ascertain her ability to give consent, even after he has been drinking too?

I agree that what he did is morally reprehensible, but I am not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that she didn't give consent.

It's not polite to answer with a question, so first answer mine and then I'll answer yours.

So on that basis the next time a girl wakes up with a hangover and lack of memory of the previous nights events next to a guy she wishes she wasn't next to, she should go to the nearest police station and report him for rape just because she can't remember what happened, and the guy should be convicted of rape even if he says she consented? Based on the amount of alcohol the average 18-25 year old drinks nowadays I'm not sure our prison system would cope!

Jesus - I guess this is why people like Ched are ending up in jail. This isn't new legislation - if someone is not deemed in a state to legally consent then you're raping them. Proving it is obviously much harder, but that's the crux.
