Foreigners are unsociable and refuse to venture beyond their own culture and friends

Unsociable? British expats 'fail to make local friends' - Telegraph

The research showed that when it comes to making friends overseas, more than one in four (27 per cent) of expats would describe their social group as mainly British, while one in 10 admitted their friends were exclusively British. Just 10 per cent mixed predominantly with locals.

This is in contrast to the attitude of expats who have moved to Britain. According to the latest HSBC Expat Explorer survey, the UK is the top location for expats to socialise with locals over fellow expats. A total of 49 per cent said they have mainly local friends, compared with 31 per cent globally.

Language is probably the main barrier. The fact that the British are bad at speaking foreign languages means they won't mix.

Though that isn't really any excuse because loads of foreign nationals want to practise their English with a native English speaker and it's fun teaching people words they wouldn't otherwise come across.

        Very true.

I don't know how many expats I've met here who refuse to learn the lingo and only socialise in their own expat groups. It's not just the Brits, but also Irish, French and Italians.

I've gone to a couple of expat get-togethers in cloggers when I first moved here and it seemed the people I met only seemed to socialise with one another and not cloggies.

I decided to give it a miss and joined some local clubs and got to know the locals, it's not easy as the cloggies are very socially reserved and it takes months to get to know them. They are not in the habit like the Brits or Irish of inviting people for drinks very easily. I do know some Brits and Irish peeps but that was through work or non expat social events or courses I've done.

In the UK I met Irish people who would only live in certain areas of London that were predominately Irish and would not socialise outside of that group.

I am with you on that. I once explained 'tulip' to an Italian ....

Why are Brits living abroad called expats and not immigrants?

Because me and my kind are exporting skills. Immigrants are those that keep coming back after being chucked out, like Suity.

Peruvian tour guide asked what you call someone who speaks three languages?

                  Trilingual.

                  What about two?

                  Bilingual.

                  What about just one?

                  British.

Not sure if you're being serious but the concept of exporting skills is very subjective. You could have all the professional and technical skills everybody can dream of, but if you can't speak the local language 99% of the locals will think you're an idiot, otherwise
they might understand your language and think you're arrogant for not trying to blend.
