It would be very tricky. How would the MoD protect the islands with mostly Scottish airspace and waters between them? They would need to take the long way around in international airspace and waters. It took them 24 hours to send a boat from Plymouth to check out a Russian warship in the North Sea. -

I think the Shetlands were owned by Norway until the 1200s, when they were ceded to Scotland as part of a dowry for a Norwegian princess (the Maid of Norway).
