The Shetland question

Not unreasonable if that's what they'd overwhelmingly prefer, but at the moment it appears that many would rather remain as part of the UK.
The channel islands have all sorts of governmenty stuff that the Shetlands/Orkneys may not have (no idea if they do) plus they're in a smallish area, I couldn't guess if that model would be practical if it was wanted.

In the event that Scotland does go independent they would be on very rocky moral grounds if they tried to object to the islands fecking off from Scotland.

It would be very tricky. How would the MoD protect the islands with mostly Scottish airspace and waters between them? They would need to take the long way around in international airspace and waters. It took them 24 hours to send a boat from Plymouth to check out a Russian warship in the North Sea.

I'd imagine we'd just fly/sail right through them, it's not like anyone's going to stop us.

I think the Shetlands were owned by Norway until the 1200s, when they were ceded to Scotland as part of a dowry for a Norwegian princess (the Maid of Norway).
