Interesting to note that British diplomat summoned by Russia over 'missile' reports - BBC News

Russia summoned Britain's defence attache in Moscow to explain reports that RAF pilots had been authorised to shoot down Russian aircraft in the Middle East, the Foreign Office says.
So a major diplomatic incident caused by what was printed in the gutter press. I'd would say East/West relations are a little fractious right now.

Then again, this kind of tulip doesn't help either .... World War Three could be just 30 SECONDS away as attacks on ISIS stepped up - Mirror Online

What was actually said was that there was a near miss (20 miles) between a NATO aircraft and a Russian aircraft over Syria. At those speeds the time to impact is less than 30s. Not that we are 30s away from WW3.

That said, the fact that the gutter press is able to make the British attache's bum squeak and they are continuing to publish this dross unabated actually could be a self fulfilling prophecy.

      https://www.rt.com/news/318342-briti...ter-jets-iraq/

British pilots have been allegedly instructed to avoid contact with Russian aircraft.

“The first thing a British pilot will do is to try to avoid a situation where an air-to-air attack is likely to occur — you avoid an area if there is Russian activity,” an unnamed source from the UK's Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) told the Sunday Times. “But if a pilot is fired on or believes he is about to be fired on, he can defend himself. We now have a situation where a single pilot, irrespective of nationality, can have a strategic impact on future events.”
Bit of an assumption there that a Russian jet will fire first...

The front page of today’s Star on Sunday speculates that RAF Tornados bombing ISIL targets in Iraq are to be armed with air-to-air missiles to protect them from attack and that RAF pilots have been cleared to fire on hostile Russian jets. The Sunday Times features a similar story and quotes a military source who is alleged to have said “up until now there has been no or little air-to-air threat, but the situation has changed and we need to respond accordingly”.

      An MOD spokesperson said:

There is no truth in this story.
They will do anything to sell their 50p paper it would seem...

      Another point of note:

British Tornado GR4 fighter jets operating in Iraq were manufactured more than a quarter of a century ago, whereas the Russian Sukhoi Su-30SM fighter jets ensuring air escort for the assault groups in Syria entered service in the 21st century and are a step ahead of their British counterparts in every way, including inventory and radar range.

“All operational flights [in Syria] are being performed with activated defensive onboard [radioelectronic combat] gear,” Igor Konashenkov, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman, said on October 3. This means that locking on to a missile on Russian 4++ generation fighter jet would be a tough assignment for a veteran British aircraft.
Just as well we're not flying any jets in Syria at the moment....

I imagine it will pop up on Reuters if it did happen. (Not there yet AFAICS)

Seriously wondering whether to up the priority of renovating the water pump and artesian well in my back courtyard.

After all, if the eleccy goes then the pumping stations will be dead and there will be no mains water

It's a Russian drone which was also shot down in Ukraine.
