But what about that silver platter too? Probably worth as much as all the other pots combined.

Way to go, reducing a hugely complex and ongoing situation to a simple "it was America wot dun it".

The civil war is hardly America's fault, it's more part of the ongoing Arab Spring, and if you want to attribute blame to a Western power then you could look a bit closer to home, to Britain and France.

It's a bit difficult to "facilitate democratic elections" when Assad doesn't want them, but you carry on appeasing the dictator while self-flagellating and wringing your hands about the poor refugees. In case you haven't noticed, those "poor Syrian people" are fleeing the country in droves, I doubt that asking Assad nicely for elections (which are unlikely to be free and fair) will bring them back as quickly.

It's very much America's fault and elections leading to an orderly exit for Assad is part of the deal Putin and Obama have just made.

Of course it's all fault of USA that Assad decided to use firearms on peaceful demostration of opposition which did not like the fact that minority sect lead by Assad runs whole country

"A US defence official said: "A Russian official in Baghdad this morning informed US embassy personnel that Russian military aircraft would begin flying anti-Isil [IS] missions today over Syria. He further requested that US aircraft avoid Syrian airspace during these missions."

Did you not even read past the first paragraph? FYI, the second one starts like this:
Demonstrations and violent crackdowns by the al Assad government have convulsed the country since the Arab Spring began

So Russia is now, under the pretence of destroying ISIS, bombing the crap out of the Syrian rebels, the same rebels the West have been tacitly supporting.

The only thing that might save us is our fear that Putin is such a mad man that we back off and let him get on with it. Just like Ukraine.

                      This will not end well.
