As for "letting it lie", over the last 18 years the events have been blamed on "all Muslims", etc. "We" have an enemy. "We" need to spend more on military, "we" need to reduce/remove citizens rights in the name of freedom, "we" need to have "guilty until proven innocent, and even then call it fake"... and anyone who disagrees with "us" is an evil communist peacenik.
There's no room for debate or discussion, to some everything must be black or white, can't be a grey area, daren't change minds from entrenched positions, and if you don't know what's being talked about, just reply with "what the **** are you on about?", and maybe belittle those who disagree.
