All the way from Scotland would be fine if we were talking Aberdeen or Dundee, Edinburgh is not that far from Manchester in the whole scheme of things (about 210 miles)

By way of comparison, the early morning fares from London to Manchester tomorrow are 35 and 38 for standard and first. Edinburgh to Manchester is about the same distance and the prices go up to 154 in first! As I said, I appreciate that today is short notice and a working day but tomorrow isn't

As I said, my wife is ill and illness is not something you can plan for. Also, tomorrow is advance...its not today and its not a working day either so why are they charging peak time prices

It's hardly the train company's fault your wife is ill. You're working away in a job that allows you to afford to travel first class to avoid getting a bit hot, so stop complaining!

Actually looking into it the virgin ones are pretty reasonable tomorrow. Its just the crappy trans pennine ones that are expensive. Also, fwiw, if you need to travel at very short notice, all the train tickets revert to Anytime single fares - they have nothing to do with how many seats have been sold on the train. I've travelled at short notice and been stung for eyewatering amounts and been sat in an almost empty coach.

I never once said it was. I was saying that it's annoying that you get stung, especially when she will now not be using her cheap ticket to get up here which just happens to be non refundable. As for the 'bit hot' comment. Stop being such a tool. The conditions in standard last week were shocking. When you take a train that is running at peak time and cut it in half and then its fairly obvious that there are going to be a lot of people standing and the air con will not be able to deal with the heat they are generating. Especially on such a 'long' journey! There were quite a few angry conversations between people who had pre booked seats who had to stand because the train was deregulated.

You can buy advance tickets as early as the day of travel. As MSE says:

I think it works this way nationally - they don't just decide to stop selling the advance tickets. Happy to hear otherwise but I thought this was regulated in some fashion.
