My advice - be the opportunist and go for the new one.

The timescales in all the contracts I've taken have been longer than originally stated!

Show em that they don't need that permie
Good things come to those who wait

Like **** ....Go out and earn it!!!

A good point. Trouble is some institutions IMHO are going down the permie route regardless and wont ever consider contractor unless there is no option.

But like you said, not many get permies in the timescale they originally hoped for.

You have to be clever about this. Tell current client that you will need to take a break from current contract for 8 weeks and be back. If its as laidback as you say it is, no-one will miss you. Offer to be available over email and phone for contingencies. Offer to find temporary replacement if possible

Complete other contract and come back. If other contract is extended then insist for at least 3 months as an extension. If accepted politely tell your previous client that you will not be able to come back but can transition to someone.

The best bet would be to do 2 days a week at your current client and 3 in your new client if at all possible.

LOL. A very good idea of course.

Even someone like me wouldn't have the nerve/cheek to try this though. Its a bit tight on original client knowing full well you've got no intention of coming back if new one works out longer.

I think original client may get someone else in if I leave though. Not saying they wouldn't ever have me back but it'd be a bit weird if I gave notice, disappeared for a few months and then asked to go back. Imagine they'd be thinking, right, first decent contract he'll be off again which would be fair.

Can't see that flying, take the new role PC, 8 weeks is a long time and the economy/market is on the way up!

There is a major flaw in that piece of advice to the OP.
