Client sent me home and going to terminate my contract

I’m new to contracting, I resigned from a well-paid permanent role and started contracting not long ago,2 weeks after start of my contract I got told that I should fill in Criminal Records Bureau checks, at the time of signing contract there was no mention of Criminal Records Bureau checks checks ( neither of the client nor agent mentioned this to me)
Unfortunately I have committed a minor offense which is very old and i had to declare on my form, 2 weeks later I get told by line manager that I should leave the office and don’t come to work until management are back from holiday and discuss my circumstances internally. Can they terminate my contract?
I left my permanent job and relocated to a new town purely for this contract, and was not told about the checks until I started the role. All beyond my control: /

They can do what they want. That is why they take contractors, not permie head count.

Your contract will probably have a one weeks notice period from the client, or notice of anything from one month to contract term for your side to terminate.

When contracting you need to have a warchest built up before you resign a cushy permie job.

Do you have that warchest? If so, great. If not, what were you thinking of???

CRB is a very common thing for a lot of contracts. What was the crime you committed? Is there anyway it can be removed by the court / LPF that dealt with it?

Basically, yes, they can tell you to stick it, regardless of the CRB aspect. You have no rights as a contractor, unlike being permie.

Has this minor offence not come up for permie roles before?

I suspect you will be okay - as its a minor offence and very old - but they can do what the contract says. Read your contract - they can probably terminate you by giving notice.

Call the agent on Monday - if still closed then Wednesday.

I've only had to fill it in once and that was at the very very end of a contract when I was going to have access to actual patient records. By the time the CRB check had come back I'd already finished!

Unusual - haven't been asked since first permie job (MOD).

My history as a serial killer doesn't affect my ability to write code.

As others have said - probably too soon to panic, but contact agent as soon as you can, and get your CV on the job boards.

I don't think it's common. Never needed one for any permie job. I did need one for my current contract, but then I have access to highly confidential data (not owned by ClientCo), so it's not surprising.

You don't 'declare' anything for a CRB check. You provide your name, address history etc and they search the Criminal Record DBase.

Different clients may have differing opinions on what's 'OK', judging by their reaction they have a zero-tolerance approach, and unless you're niche technology then why would the client bother to change that policy?

But it does affect your ability to get on with the users though.
