Hello,
I am seriously considering leaving my permie role to begin contracting so would be grateful for any advice regarding securing my first contract.
What I really want to know is will I have to leave my current permie job first to be competitive in the contracting market, or am I likely to secure work before I leave? A large number of contracts I've viewed demand an immediate start. As I must work a 4 week notice period this stuffs my chances for these.
Also, I will be looking for .NET contracts primarily ASP.NET, SQL Server 2000, XSL, XML. I have 4 years development experience and I'm a MCP. If an agent asks me for my rate what is the best thing to say? i.e do I tell them I want the market rate for my skills and experience or give them a definite figure. I ask this because the rates seem to vary by a huge amount (from as little as 12ph up 45ph!)
Any advice would be most appreciated.
Steven
