Depends on whether you're a gambling man or not. Buy yourself out and 2 weeks later the project gets canned, you're down£4000, the project runs and runs; quids in.

The main thing that agencies seem to do is payroll, and this is the buffer of waiting up to 90 days to get payment, if you've got a warchest to absorb this then they look even less useful. If you're a newby, then it's a service.

Modis at tesco (the sole supplier) are limited to 7%, which as a business agreement seems good for just about everyone except tesco.

Also worth remembering that the default cover I have only covers me for Agency default, not ClientCo non payment so an my exposure to bad debt is lower if I go via agent.

In this case I'm working for a public sector client (see my other post on public sector working about this) which isn't likely to non pay - though they may be a bit slow. I'm ok with that - I like to have some unpaid invoices incase I ever get benched. I know there's little likely hood of recruiting anyone else as we've been trying to backfill several of us contractors since I've been here and we just can't find anyone suitable. That's not me doing job protection - the client manager has final say - and doesn't want amateurs doing what is a complex role. In the meantime the scope of the department is getting bigger and we get more projects coming in. To be honest - I'm worried I'll never get out of here. More than likely - I'll take a few months off over next summer build a house and then come back - direct! Maybe I can make it a habit to do 5.5 months a year for them around their main annual release cycles!
