This is just to prove that the person is not involved in any illegal activities or sentenced during that period.

There is no harm in agency asking these details because the clients are asking this. Provide them with any of your known mates or friends working in some known organisation. They will ask for work email for the referee for this reference.
Yeah, that really is due diligence.

I lolled at this, you would think that Crapita would at least know of the existence of the CRB

When I was asked about any gaps between contracts, I simply pointed out that I as a full time employee of my limited company, which is a legal entity, they should write to the Director (Me) asking for professional references and a confirmation that as an employee I have a 100% work attendance record.

The NHS accepted this as it was compliant with their HR rules and agreed to write asking for a professional reference and No Gap proof.

Is this as part of a security clearance check by any chance?

I had this for a contract recently (via capita also - and yes it turned out to be pants and I'm out of here in a week but that's another story) but it did turn out to be related that.

It's at application stage. as someone has pointed out, you'd expect crapita to be aware of cRB seeing as they cocked it up, er, sorry, were the vendor who delivered the project!

Documenting 28 day breaks!? They can fook off, it's not like the role advertised was security related or anything like that.
I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!

Then dont work for them, tell them you are not interested. Things like this are warning signs in life, if you ignore the warnings at this stage then dont be surprised when its the most bulltulip job / company to work for ever.
