Going to the Dark Side - Permie Offer .....er......in Thailand

Anyone got any experience of working in Thailand they'd like the share - stuck this in here looking for more sensible answers.

Been offered a job (well an interview, flown out to Thailand at their expense) so pretty sure they must want me - truly global firm so they're not after a kidney. Offer is a shade over half what I'd earn contracting if I was to bill another good 48 weeks.

Though I reckon I'd treat is as a 2 year contract type thing and look to come back after that. Less money, yes but young free and single I'm thinking it must be worth a crack at it for a few years.

Anyone care to offer anything they think would be sensible.

Where abouts would you be based? Spent about 8 weeks in Thailand on holidays and love the place but Bangkok is crazy mad and I couldn't live with the pollution there. Even as a tourist, the country is cheap as chips - it would be even cheaper still if you lived there and knew your way around.

It would definitely be a great experience but I would be surprised if you are still single after two years there. Seriously, the girls are around single blokes like flies around tulip. You'd be wanting to get one on your arm just to keep the others at bay.

But yeah, in your position. Hell yeah. I'd do it.

The Land of The Smiles is a great place to visit. I've got some friends who live there (non-contractors) and they love it. The cost of living is cheap too.

But be very careful out in the streets. A lad riding a motorbike behind me on the pavement tried to snatch my bag and drive off with it when I was over, and I had to persuade him not to. And, obviously, be very careful that you know exactly who you're dealing with. You won't be the first Brit to be duped by the offer of a job, only to find they want you to carry a little package through customs for their dear old grandmother in Harrogate when you get there. Just be aware of the risks, and you should be fine, should you choose to accept a contracting offer there.

I have just returned from 3 years working at a number of banks in Bangkok. Personally I had a great time but I was on a good deal, even by European standards. Like anywhere, there are good and bad points, but for every expat that has embraced the culture and had a great time I can honestly say there's another that has been ruined by the experience.

Do you have any specific questions or concerns?

That's where I used to import all my tat from, so know the country well.

Bangkok is a nice hot & stuffy city. It can become a bit much at times. Most expats live down the Sukhumvit road and the cost of accomodation is risen quite steeply in years. With that in mind though, you get what you pay for and a £1000 a month should get you a decent place.

Food, drink and everything else is dirt cheap. So living costs are low.

Remember in Asia, no is actually yes, and yes is yes. So the culture of expectation is different.

Personally I prefer Chaing Mai. Very laid back.

          Beware of katoi.

            Hi

Spent 2 years in Bangkok for a mobile telco as an expat.

Its a fun place to live, but the lifestyle can take its toll. I was single when I went out, but would not take a partner with me. I would base myself in Singapore if that was the case.

You can get some amazing deals on apartments, and you standard of living will be much higher than UK and thats the problem, you can quickly forget you are there to work :-)

Thanks guys all good info. No specific questions as yet. The job is for a parcel company, big orange and red logo so you never know maybe they do want something shuffling through the airport.

Oh yeah Dope, Herion and LSD.

Good luck and have fun if you get and accept the offer.

Get a nice off roader while you're out there.
