I have never seen a 3 month notice period and it sounds excessive to me. You need to make sure that the notice period is mutual, i.e. if they expect you to give 3 months then the same applies to them.

Last year, I was talking to a company which had taken on what sounded like an out-sourcing deal - they were talking of a guarantee of five years of work there, in which case they wanted to put a three month notice period in there.
But I'll agree that that would be pretty rare, in my experience - especially for a six month contract.
