    First rate staredown!

Been offered extension at current client, given current market is quite good in my field, decided to go for rate-renegotiation.

Agent said, client has stated no rate increases so I should speak to them

Client has said, not their issue, I should speak to my Agent

I decided they are playing silly buggers and have said no to the renewal on the basis we can't come to agreement on rate.

Her indoors is not best pleased, but I am confident that I will find other work, or client will sort something out regards rate 'he says in hope!'
Politicians are wonderfull people, as long as they stay away from things they don't understand, like working for a living!

Good call. Let us know if they come back to you.

Good point, but I would not say that to her, a frying pan to the head is something I like to avoid.

Enterprise Architect - Few irons in fire ATM so pretty comfortable

Plus I have a few people at current client that I expect to rattle cages as soon as they hear I am not renewed.

What the client is trying to tell you is that the agent is taking a fat margin and any increase has to come out of the agent's margin. Find out what the client is paying the agent and then go back to them and beat them up for a rate increase.

If they won't budge then remind them that if you don't take the extension you will be looking for a new contract and all the agents are demanding "two references" so agents will be buzzing around the client like flies around tulip, trying to place someone.

This assumes that the client knows what the OP is getting. It could be that the agent is not getting a good margin and the client is being stubborn.

I think it will probably work i.e. you will get a rate increase of some sort and an extension. If I was the client, in order to not let this happen to me again i.e. being backed into a corner, I'd be looking for a replacement and someone to take a handover from you pretty sharpish before getting rid.

Great topic. Could we re-name it "how I lost my job"?

Congratulations on demanding more money, only to find out that the client doesn't value you as much as you thought.

Good luck in the job market - get your thinking cap on for the inevitable question of "why did you leave your last contract" - I wouldn't take someone on who said "well, I went for a rate increase from the client, and they wouldn't budge, so I went for the agents margin, and they wouldn't reduce it, so I left". That's ticking time bomb central......

                    Can't argue with that
