When to look for new contracts?

    Hi there,

I am on a 3 months contract at the moment, 1.5 months have passed, when should I start looking again?

    Regards,
    Kevin

Probably worth starting to update your CV and send feelers out now and then step it up into your last month, especially if there is no sign of re-newal.

I usually start looking when I have a month to go. Enough time to look and end up with a shorter notice period.

Is an renewal a possibility? Ask them just before you start looking if you would accept it.

Unfortunately, a lot of the time, starting to look early doesn't help.

When a pimp finds out you've got six weeks to go, that will normally result in you getting binned anyway. Just about all of the contracts I've even had have been 'urgent' with pimps/clients looking to get you in within two weeks or even quicker if poss.

I usually start the 'feelers' thing with about a month and look seriously in the last ten days or so. having said that, I'm usually a jammy git and something lands in my lap before I start looking properly.

what do you do when agent/client hasnt sorted out a renewal but the client does want you to stay?

Down tools on last day and dont come back till its sorted?

                Looking

I start around a month out – begin looking for the perfect role (exact fit to my skills and in my locality) then as the weeks go by, look more widely.

I also never tell the agent how long I have left – always say I am on a rolling week contract, just finishing up a couple of bits with the client etc. I figure that it usually takes a week or so until interviews are set-up, then a few days until the contract gets out to you and you sign it then it takes usually a week or two until you can start (this is banking experience with all the pre-checks – may be different elsewhere). I have once had to say that I have an short emergency holiday to buy some more time. I have not yet once gone to an urgent role to be actually busy and set-up within the first two weeks.

Well, I am on a 3 months rolling, very likely to be renewed, but an agent told me this opportunity which is more money and better sector. I still have 1.5 months left , is it not a good thing to terminate the contract early if i got the other job?
