    Discrimination?

I am a contractor and I have been working for the same client for quite a while, nearly 3 years. I coach permanent staff and am very productive in terms of the code that ends up in production and well yes I think I am very good for the client. Now, there is chap that is also a contractor in my team and he has been around here for just a few months and, crucially, we have the same skill set.

Now my boss has decided that the new chap should learn another tool over me and I am not happy about this because if I could get any commercial experience with it I would be earning more money in future contracts.

What do you think I should do? Why shouldn't I get a chance learning and using this new tool as well?

I have just spotted a major flaw in the work he has done and e-mailed him alone the details of the problem. Shouldn't I be copying in my boss with the problems?

    Careful

Urgh you a contractor and you're there to do a job, if you want to get experience then go perm and you can then complain about the lack of opportunity. Sorry but this is one of the drawbacks of being a contractor. You're there to apply your expert skills not learn new ones, you're not an investment in the future you're a fulfilment of a current need.

If you email your boss with his coding faults every dev in the building will immediately distrust you and you will be looking for a new contract next time it comes up for renewal. No want someone stabbing them in the back.

If you want to learn this technology you will need to do it on your own time and then take a contract paying desperate rates to get it on your CV. Thats the way it works, speculate to accumulate.

I wouldnt take this personally its just the way these things go, its luck of the draw.

Edit : On a positive note this often means you are appreciated on what you are doing and your boss doesnt want to risk putting someone new on it. Every cloud... silver linings.....
