Is the contract market not for the faint hearted?

To be successful in contract market, it appears only the connections with the key management (who decides the contract extensions) appear to be the factor in continuing in the contract.

Often, hard working, sincere professionals appear to lose out to those who play politics in the workplace. Sadly, by only producing quality deliverables one cannot survive in the market.

Id say it wasnt for people who arent comfortable with dealing with management at all levels. So the greasy IT geeks with pony tails who can bearly communicate, forget it.

At my current role, I find the MD and the owner are constantly asking for my opinion on a wide range of subjects. The owner told me he has been looking for someone like me for 20 years, I suspect I might not be leaving for a little bit.

Perhaps not. It involves a lot of uncertianity... if you are the sole breadearner, you can be under a lot of pressure if you dont have the right attitude

You need to have 'business man' like attitude and get the job done

The same could be said about permieville. In fact I'd say it's worse there.

A contractor is brought in to complete some work. If you complete the work, aren't a social freak and get along with the permies/other contractors (doesn't mean sucking up or trying to get in with management) then you will more than likely be extended. Contractors who do nothing but suck up to managers and don't complete their work will still get bagged.
