30 Rupees a month is the going rate, or so I've been told. Going rate for what, specifically, I'm not entirely sure.

      Not Good

Six of my colleagues (contractors) went out to India to teach them support. The Indians were all graduates and had passed their IT certifications. They knew all the answers to every IT problem, until they came to do the practical work. They were a dead loss.

One of the contractors was beaten up by Indians for talking to his sister in the hotel bar. Although he was beaten up in the hotel, there nobody wanted to be a witness.

Not one contractor wanted to go back to India.

for talking to his sister in the hotel bar.
That was pretty stupid of him.

nobody wanted to be a witness
Would not that be just the same in the UK?

Do remember that foreign countries are, well, foreign.

One should not judge other countries using an English culture, for starters.

          Also, you should not generalise:
'The Indians were all graduates and had passed their IT certifications. They knew all the answers to every IT problem, until they came to do the practical work. They were a dead loss'.

What was their level of experience?

I do a fair bit of consultancy/training in India. My customers there have been a joy to work for. Talented, informed and very enthusiastic. Notably smaller number of entitled, bad attitude muppets than in Western countries.

I found the people welcoming and friendly. Great place to go for work actually - everything is so damn cheap. There is definitely a culture shock but it is a great place to visit. So much new stuff. Jump at the chance!

Sorry to hear that you have had such bad experiences contracting in the West.

Is that why India attracts you or do you just go there because the rates are so good?

Probably because he is sent there by his work perhaps?

Indians are generally quite nice to work with and most certainly dont come with the same baggage as you get with goons who call themselves contractors here in Britain!

There is a lot of opportunity in India due to outsourcing. There is a need for people who can bridge the gap between companies and their outsourcing partners.

They obviously can't afford to pay western rates but usually the company who is doing the outsourcing will pay your fee. A really interesting place to go for work. One day you are in miserable UK winter weather next you are baking in Indian heat with new experiences around every corner.

I agree with DieScum. I've never worked in India, but I have worked in other "third world" countries, and I can tell you that the people on the whole are a lot more friendly. They're not incompetent - at least no more on average than here. But the most pleasing thing about the work environment is that the general motivation for the permies was that they wanted to do a good job. They weren't working for that promotion, or that next pay rise - which is very refreshing and makes for a much better working environment overall in my opinion.
