I've been offered a role where I'll be expected to visit several sites a day but there's a few things I need clarified before I accept, whats a fair mileage rate these days?

I think the HMRC has an official figure, which I THINK might be 42p, but I'm not certain, and am rushing around at the moment, otherwise would have checked

HMRC rate is 40/25p per mile, but that's nothing to do with what you can charge your client. But I've always charged 40p per mile for the occasional trip, but if it's every day they may have a lower figure in mind.Will work inside IR35. Or for food.Comment

Assuming you have a fairly economical car, assume an average of 30mpg for extra-urban driving
£1.30 per litre means approx 20p a mile in petrol alone
Then you have depreciation costs
Then you have additional insurance costs (for business use)
40p per mile is fair... I wouldn't realy accept less than that...It's about time I changed this sig...Comment

40p/25p was a bit of a cash cow for travelling when it was raised to that level in 2002 (IIRC). Since then though motoring prices have risen to such an extent that 40p/25p covers your genuine costs of maintaining a decent car for business mileage, any less and you're probably paying for the privilege of driving on company business.

I'll be claiming the usual 40p/25p for my commute to site, its the additional mileage I need to claw back from the client.
I never imagined that tyres would account for 5p a mile.
My fuel works out at 23p a mile so with extras I am looking at 40p+.

Just thought, do I claim client mileage expenses on my invoice and add VAT?
Never claimed mileage before other than the daily commute.Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I've always charged £1 per mile plus VAT.
It's meant that when some days I get "paid" more to drive to client co than the work I do for them.
Remember once they asked me to visit London and then Manchester if I could make it. With stem mileage to/from Sockpuppet towers that was a pretty profitable day all in all.Comment
