What's your view on finishing a contract early?

I may be in a predicament in the next day or two, whereby another contract may be on the cards. I have 5 months left of my third 6 month contract with this ClientCo but my predicament is as follows:

Present ClientCo. (pros and cons)

- 5 Months work left, with probably no chance of another extension
- 600 miles per week round trip
- 3 - 4 hours travelling per day
- Boring work, no challenge, feel as if I'm at 60% effort - no drive to move forward.
- Good money for my skill set.

New ClientCo

- Exciting opportunity, progressing into some PM stuff that I'm keen to do.
- 40 mins each way journey
- Big Blue Chip for my CV
- Excellent money for my skill set
- 3 Months initial contract, 99% chance I'm guessing of extension though.


What's your opinion of finishing a contract early, hopefully on good terms. Should I stick with what I've got and be grateful or follow my heart for something more interesting...

Is your userid your real name? if so are you sure you want your name indexed by Google along with threads about leaving a contract early?

In answer to the OPs question, IMHO 1 month out of a new 6 month is a tad early, as you should have considered this when being offered the extension.

Legally of course, there is no issue as long as you adhere to the termination notice requirements in the contract.

So far I've always finished contracts, simply from a keeping the client happy for the future point of view.

yes, yes, I know you are within your rights to use your notice period, but I always worry it would burn bridges with the client and to a lesser extent the agent.

That being said, I've never been as miserable in a role as you sound.

I'd say go for it.

If your current contract is so bad and the new one is a cert, then jump. Don't let principles ruin your life. You are leaving a vacancy for someone else.

Are you certain of getting the new contract ? If so, get that signed up and make them aware of your notice period and then terminate your current contract. if you've done 2 six month contracts already, then taking something closer to home (which should be your excuse for leaving, not that the current contract is dead boring) is perfectly understandable.

To help matters you should try to stay to help bridge the gap with whomever they hire to replace you. Leaves the door open for a return later....

Is hiring person reasonable ? You should know by now. If so, approach him for a word, explain the travelling is becoming a real bind and you have another opportunity (make sure you do have one boxed off).
Tell him you want to be fair and will work as hard as it takes to do a good handover, be available for calls after you leave (it will never happen but sounds good).
If he plays hardball - you are here for the duration sonny - hand in notice (if you can) with a clear conscience.
