How much should i charge, newbie alert!!

Hi All, Im new to contracting, just been made redundant and finish next friday, i've setup my LTD company and have company bank account setup also.

Im not sure what rate i should charge for my services, i currently cover 12 sites UK, doing desktop support, lots of different apps, RF networks and voice pick, server checks backups etc.

My soon to be ex companys client have taken all this work in house but they really don't have a clue and will be needing my services as a contractor after 1st Aug.

I haven't a clue what to charge for the work i do, an example of the type of thing i may have to do is drive to Scotland build a pc restore all apps maybe a couple of hours work but 4 hrs drive each way there and back for me.

Any suggestions welcome.

That's like asking "how long is a piece of string", really hard to answer. I would recommend that you go for "Reassuringly expensive". Works well for me.

With random driving all over the place, either charge a good hourly rate or a daily rate plus expenses.

When you have unknown quantities like travel or what have you, make sure you don't end up losing out.

You defo want some compensation for stupid hours + travelling but don't do it on a pure call out basis or strictly per hour on site, they can strangle off the revenue.
I would be looking for a daily charge (200 say) which guarantees your availability wherever they want you + mileage (maybe beyond a threshold say 20 miles from home) + 30/hour for anything past 6pm (including travelling time)

Good idea on the after normal hours Luke.

So there you have it, £200-250 per day (8 hour day, pre 6p.m.), + mileage at 32p a mile, + £30 per hour after 6p.m.
