I am wondering whether it would be worth my while checking to see what kind of financial state some of these agencies are in.
Is this something you do?
Not yet I haven't. I haven't been stung by an agent yet, but there again, I am worked mainly with agencies that have been relatively stable and have a good financial history.

It's good business practice to credit check any client you work with - especially if they have longer than average payment terms. It surprises me that more contractors don't credit check agencies, simply as part of their due dilligence.

Doing a credit check is all well and good but they can still go bust without warning. How much is a credit check? I would prefer to spend the money on an insurance policy against the agent going bust...

Very true credit checks are as useful as CRB checks.
Much better to join the something like the PGC and get insurance for agencies going bust.
