    looking for subcontract work

I'm getting a bit bored in the office now. I've had no luck finding a contract so far. I always try to go direct and find an opportunity for remote working. So now I've decided to hunt around for subcontract work. I've been told that phoneing around and/or sending e-mails with my CV summaried in them is one way to go.
Does that really work? What's a good way to look for subcontracts?
