    Ending a contract

    I am in a contract, and will be completing 12 months by end of April. It was 3 months contract, extended by 3 months at a time. I think the next extension may not come through. They usually don't give their extension decision until the last minute. If I start looking, and get another opportunity elsewhere, and meanwhile if they extend my contract here, then it would be a difficult situation. Can I leave before they say "No"? I mean, can I tell them, I will finish by April end and won't be extending. I don't want it to look like they have preferred not to extend, despite my expectation. How do you all deal with ending a contract with a happy note?

    Of course you can - it is your contract, your career, put yourself first.

      If you've been there a while, you should be able to make them 'aware' that you'd like an extension decision by a specific date (e.g. 2 weeks before the end date) so that you can plan accordingly. Just say that you've been approached and you always prefer to give your current client the first option and would be keen to stay (assuming you are) and keep it professional and amicable. As long as you act professionally you'll do no harm.

      Besides those reasons, I always say to clients that I'm keen to make sure any handover activities are well organised and you can do sufficient knowledge transfer before the finish date. Again, showing them that you want to act in their best interests.

      No sense in waiting for them to tell you, its perfectly reasonable to approach them and ask..
