Security clearance is required for a specific role, so I can't see how this can work.

Incredibly unlikely and I suspect that if the DVA or the Cabinet Office got wind of that then if SHSL are currently ListX (which they would have to be to submit a Clearance request) then they won't be for much longer.
I'm not sure how much the DVA charge for processing an SC check, but I've a strong feeling it's more than £90 so again it seems unlikely.

As others have said there has to be a valid reason for a clearance to be held as live.

Again as others have said you used to be cleared and aren't now so if the client wants already cleared people odds are very low that you will be put forwards by an Agency that can draw on people who are actually cleared.

I've heard that SHSL will do this from an SHSL person. But in the following circumstance.

You've been contracting through them with SC
        Contract comes to an end.
They do the yearly update as long as you don't go abroad. You pay the admin fee.

They do this so they have a pool of SC people.

            Clearance!

Thanks for that..its a little annoying as had another call my skills are very suited to the role. I am beginning to think however that these "restrictions" of it being an urgent requirement blah blah are just created by the agency as from past experience I know clients are willing to have you work on site until you clearance is re validated - apparently it takes 30 days for the DVA to re clear you. But I guess this is up to the client, it does not mean you are in the same boat as not being cleared at all thought - it does count for something!

I'm always a bit sceptical when the rate quoted varies so much. Possibly a CV collecting excersise.

                    Sent.

Dear Vetting Group, I'm a very experienced IT contractor but repeatedly find myself unable to bid for UK government-related work because of commercial agencies constantly insisting that candidates must already be SC/DV cleared to even make an application. I'm sure you are very well aware but this is highly frustrating, especially in our economic climate. This closed shop situation greatly reduces the skill pool available for selection to carry out secure government work.

It is easy to find examples every day. The company named S3 is one of the worst offenders but there are many others. As the addresses disappear quickly (when the advert is taken down) I've attached .XPS screen images.

I understand that you are able to take action in these cases.

Unfortunately I fear that the smarter agencies simply word the tender advert slightly differently [to avoid any rebuke from you] but still deny access to people without an existing clearance as standard practice.

I would like to know what action has ever been taken in these circumstances.

                    Kind regards

It does seem stupid that having security clearance pays more money for the same role as a non sc company. What's also funny is that a techy in the forces is paid a tulipe rate compared to that of someone who has to put their life on the line.
