NI number request?

Am I making a mounting out of a mole hill here by throwing up a stink about submitting my NI number, why not my telephone number!

The agents reply:

For both contract and perm roles ***** require the NI number. The reason we need your NI number is the portal ***** use for submitting candidates, its a way of identifying candidates and a way for agencies to prove that they have spoken to candidates prior to submission. (some agencies submit CVs without speaking to candidates, as you can imagine that clients are keen to ensure this doesnt happen).

The Job Centre were adamant to me the other day that one should protect one's NI number very carefully. As supposed specialists in benefit fraud, it is possible they might even know what they are talking about.

Which is why you have to put it on every permie job application. Including those through agencies.

Anyway, there is no reason on earth why an agency should need a LtdCo contractor's NI number. Their chosen process is a bad one.

I suspect they have really done it that way as a way of stopping people who need visas from applying.

I had some tawt in wales using mine last year, had to submit loads of crap to prove it wasn't me...

You could always make one up. If all they need it for is to uniquely identify you, that will most probably work. If they ever find out, then you've proof that they're abusing the system somehow as they really have no need to know.

Their reasons are nonsense. They could just give you a reference code if it is for ID/proof agent has spoken to you purposes. NI numbers are also handy for working out somebody's age - could you play the possible age discrimination card here?

I don't have an NI number (well I probably do but haven't seen it in years) so what happens when 'foreigners' apply?

Is this a certain telco in Maidenhead? If so then yes this is indeed their standard practice. And in any case, what can they do with your NI number? Pay some tax for you?

Duh!

If you want to pretend to be someone else i.e. steal someone's id then having their NI number helps.

Also if you ever have to claim benefits or even get your pension if someone has been using your NI number to do the same, then you are going to have to fight to claim what you are entitled to.
