Well I hope you feel better getting that off your chest.
Waiting on the phone to ring is absolutely horrible but it's your anger and the way you spoke to that agent at the bottom of your post which interests me.
It is very easy to blame the agents for your lack of success but before going down that route you must ask yourself whether you can do more for yourself.
I notice you use a few "choice" words to describe agencies and perhaps some of this is justified but it is easy to check if they are the problem. Simply bypass them and talk to clients directly. If you still get no joy then you must conclude that your anger is being misdirected.
Obviously I don't have your CV but you must also ask whether your skillset is truly unique. If not, then you'll be in competition with tens of other candidates. Why should your CV stand out in particular? Difficult question but you must ask it.
Are you willing to work anywhere in the UK?
It is seriously bad news to say no to that.
Is your phone manner good enough? Do you come across as desperate for work? Aggressive? Demanding? Any of these will make an agent ditch your CV.
Do you send in your CV in pdf format or make certain rate or contract demands up front? In short, do you come across as awkward in any way?
Have you annoyed an agent in the past?
Could word have got out about you? This is rare but I know this has happened to people before.
Interestingly enough I am looking for a good Prince2 practitioning project manager for a 3 month contract. If you have good embedded C and fancy a spell in Glasgow for £350 per day then pass me your CV at info@oaksoft-consultancy.com otherwise best of luck.
[added after edit]It has just occured to me that this is an interesting way for a Project Manager to react to a problem. Very revealing. I'd expect a cooler head.[/added after edit]
