I m due to go to an interview for a 3 week contract (holiday cover) and they want to interview me ....in the meanwhile I have been offered another role ( at a better rate!) do I tell the first agent the truth or let them down gently with a little white lie?

This has happened to me twice as an agent.
I can absolutely assure you that speedy honesty is the only way to play it. Otherwise you are wasting everyone's time and endangering your reputation.
When I was doing traditional contracting I remember telling an agent that he could now stop looking for me. The abuse he gave me about how he was "working his butt off for me" was incredible. His bubble was punctured when I pointed out that he had not found me an interview in 3 months and that I was merely making a courtesy call.Comment

I might not like the blood sucking good for nothing not much better than car or estate agents but its just common curtesy to let em know you have something else on the go.
