    I feel so relieved...

...that I turned down a 6 month contract re-newal in my last role midway through the project back in May. It at the time felt totally the right thing to do, having weighed up all factors and discussing with the wife and boiled down to the reasons below.

And having taken a few weeks off and landing another role in 6 weeks I am finding my current role more enjoyable and challenging, stress free, providing a very decent work/life balance (home just after 6 every day), not having to travel away from home in the week, good management support, nice environment and people, decent albeit lower daily rate than my previous role.

Nearly 2 months on don't get me wrong this role is not without troubles, however I knew I was taking a massive risk in turning down the re-newal in the last role and had the courage and gut instinct to turn it down, happy admitting family reasons and a total kn** of a boss being the overall factors (I have two absolutely beautiful young kids).

Just thought I would share that with you all - in these difficult times I have learnt to go with my gut instinct and has paid dividends

There ain't no substitute for experience. Experience told you what do do. But you listened.

Well done for making the right professional decision for you and trusting yourself. That is really, really hard in a downturn, but is the mark of a real professional.

Good for you, always nice to see things turn sunny side up for people

I on the other hand went the opposite way today, was offered out of the blue a sweet gig at a great rate today but turned it down as would have ended at end of year while current crappy gig (in both pay and work) should last until I have had enough. Decided don’t want the risk at the moment as managed to avoid most of the pain of this recession (unlike the post 2001 one) and want to keep it that way.

Someone at work will probably make me regret my decision tomorrow

Well done mate! I did the same thing last year myself (knocked back an extension in favour of my family) and I don't regret it for a minute either.

Well done! Must have been a hard decision to make at the time. Less stress and decent work/life balance is worth so much.
