This thread is very negative towards testing and future testing opportunities. Personally I still think there are good opportunities in testing, it is less affected than outsourced software development. I know quite a few testers and most are doing well. Sure, it`s difficult right now for the unlucky ones but the good times always roll round. I know quite a few testers and some have been constantly in contracts for many years, sometimes earning some very good rates also.
The specialist jobs like Head of Testing are hard to come by and if you want to specialise in that you have to be prepared for long long bench periods and price yourself accordingly to make up for the bench periods - it`s a permiedom job mostly.
I think PZZZ is a developer who doesn`t like testers because they find his bad code

Yes, me too, and in the past I was one of them! But also, I do know a few who have come off contract in the last 6 months and not managed to pick up anything else.
Like you, if I'm honest, I don't see testing as a dead market in the UK any more than development - but I do think that opportunities for both have been seriously affected by off-shoring and that it may get worse. It will be interesting to see what happens in the market once the financial climate improves......which could start as soon as next month, if the recession really is over.
