      I was happy on £200 a day, I cleared about £3300 a month after tax and accountants fees.

      You're not using one of those showbiz accountants are you? Does he look like he's living beyond his means??
      Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

          £200 per day for SC developers is piss poor, but SC isn't exactly a skill, and if it's local then £1000 per week is better than a long stint on the bench.

            In my view, £200 per day for a gig quite near home is ok, just ok mind. £200 per day away from home is pants. You might as well just do some temp job for £70 a day.

              The rates on offer aren't good enough to allow for travel or digs but they don't need to be as there are plenty of people in all locations scrabbling around for scraps of work.

              It's just supply and demand, no point in moaning about rates when we choose to operate in such a way that leaves us wide open to market conditions.

                My contract is just over £200/day - admittedly 30% drop on my previous one after travel taken into account
                I can pay all bills, including a chunky railcard and have enough to buy a new house v. soon.
                As others have said - how on earth have you got £1000 a week operating exenses? You're not an ex MP are you?

                  When he said there is "nothing" left, I would think that he was speaking conversationally, not arithmetically.

                    Nothing left arithmetically. My basic calculation would be

                    £200 x 5 = £1000 per week
                    13 week contract = £13,000
                    Salary = £9,600
                    Expenses = £2,500
                    Corp tax = £180
                    3 month profit = £720

                    He's right nothing left from a profit point of view.
