    Dev to PM ?

Interested for other opinion as I imagine quite a few people here may have done this...

Has anybody here moved over from being a software developer to being a project manager?

Its something I'm keen to do and would like some advice. I've worked as team lead etc and managed large projects from end to end so is it just a matter of stretching a bit further?

One other thing if anybody has done this; do you regret it?

I personally believe that if you have the drive in you then go for it. What scale are you looking at? Would you be officially classed as a PM or maybe more of a Co-ordinator?

Also have you any qualifications such as PRINCE2 which most 'buzzword happy' Agents will want to see before putting you forward?
    Permietractor (probably)

You don't need any qualifications or ability to be PM.

      Oh, you mean Project Manager.

        Very good. Also very true.

I don't have Prince 2 but I'm going to use my bench time to do it. I'm led to believe its a great big waste of time but I appreciate some firms want it so needs must I suppose...

I enjoy development but I'm much more interested in leading teams from the start to the finish of a project, I've done it in the past but its been more of a team lead/lead dev position.

How hard is Prince 2 to pass?

I understand where you are coming from but if you are just new into the PM world you have to have some formal training to replace your experience.

Prince 2 is a very useful and practical methodology - the problem is where people with years of experience have to formally qualify.......the expression 'teaching granny to suck eggs' comes to mind!

As a suggestion, I would take one of the many "Intro to PM" type courses. Start with that and get a feel for what project management should be like and not what you have witnessed from PM's you have worked with.

For the record, I started as a software developer many moons ago......!!

Just blag he interviews, then turn up with this under your arm.

You couldn't do any worse than some of the monkeys pretending to manage projects here.

Good link, I like the reviews. It's a worry ain't it, it does appear just to take a line in bulltulip, a matalan suit, Prince 2 and a copy of that book.

But they get paid 30% more than me so who's the mug?

                  Project Management here I come!
