lot of my mates are heading back to oz because of the slump, but a lot have jobs to go back to. most of them (and mates back home) think that if you are going to go, now is the time to do it, as the oz market is still heading downwards and will be worse in 6 months time. also think it will take longer to recover when the turn around happens - but we are probably younger and less experienced than most of you guys.

i wouldn't move the family out there, maybe have a scout around by yourself first? i think the lifestyle is definitely better there, but the money is worse and a lot of brits do not like how far away it is from everywhere, especially family and friends back home. in oz you are just used to it - my local friends moan about how long it takes to get to SE asia and i just laugh.

Just a postscript to this thread. I moved out here (Melbourne) on Sunday (arrived Tuesday). I had set up an interview for Wednesday and got the gig which will almost certainly run into next year

The rate is a bit below my last UK gig but with the LAFHA I will actually take home more (even outside IR35). And there's no IR35 hassle to deal with.

I am currently being emailed around 10 jobs a day (restricted to Melbourne CBD) and rates are pretty good.

I am a Test Manager and in general things in the UK market in testing are pretty dire by comparison.

Early days I know but I love almost everything I've encountered so far. My wife and son have been out here 2 months and they feel the same.

I suppose my first question is, do companies still sponsor people to go over there or do I need to just get my ass over there and look for work from that end?

Anyone on here done this type of thing before and have any word of wisdom to pass on?

I don't know if you have already been to Oz, but all I can say is, the wife and I regret moving back. We've lived in a few places around the world, but our favourite city is Melbourne by quite a distance. Lots to do, great transport, good weather (better than Britain but not stupidly hot)

Don't let anyone from Sydney turn your head!
          Dezze,
no one from sydney gives a tulip.

the whole supposed sydney v melbourne rivalry is a one way thing.... when sydneysiders bother even thinking about melbourne they see it is a bit of a joke.

I done a quick search on my type of roles and one popped up @ $800 per day based in Melbourne - if that's the standard, I'm offski

Just applying for my independant visa - spent time in both Sydney and Melbourne and they are both great in very different ways. In terms of working
and number of contracts - they are both pretty much the same imo.

Oz is no paradise. Melbourne & Sydney are very expensive. IT market is swamped by migrant workers.
