Do you always send a covering letter when applying for contracts?

when you attach your CV for jobs or contracts it always has the option to attach a covering letter. Whats everyones thoughts on this, is it something you do for every one you apply for an amend a covering letter for each one to make it relevent or do you just use a standard template or just not bother and send the CV?

Just wondering really to see if an agent is even going to bother looking at a covering letter.

I either update/amed my CV to highlight any skills, experience, etc that are relevant to the role. Or I send a covering letter/email.....
I think updating CV per role is probably better approach to take....

I just amend the CV slightly each time depending on the role but I never attach a seperate cover note unless there is a box on the screen pre-filled with some text about the job and then I add in some more words.

Sounds like I'm doing the normal thing then and no need to do anything extra.

My CV is my covering letter and my Resume.

Yes, always. I stress why they should hire me. Although why I'm telling the competition this, I don't know.

I was told by agents that they don't read them as they get too many applications.

I tend to put in their name, one line and my name.
