    Contract To Permy Salary

Usual question, been asked to go contract to perm and have been asked what my salary expectations are and to justify it.

I really don't know how to price myself, I'm not going to take a market rate salary as I don't really want permy and the salary needs to reflect this. I know they need me more than I need them as I could pick up another contract quiet easily, but on the flip side I do like it here. What have others done in the same situation, ask for a salary that would pay the same net as you recieved contracting or lower ?

    Cheers

      as a rough guide:
      hourly rate * 1000 = annual salary
      is, I believe, the norm.

      which is ~ 50% turnover

But don't forget you get, salary + maybe (bonus + pension + medical + holiday + sick) etc + employers NI on top.

        I did for day rate * 160 + 28 days holiday + bank holidays + car + sick + life insurance + health cover + bonus.

So I guess it varies somewhat. That and my day rate was obviously too low....

During the last downturn I heard of many contractors in Investment Banks going permie for almost the same salary as their contracting income.

In those days I think it was the case of the clients wanting to appear as though they were doing something rather than really doing anything. There might be a bit more real pressure on costs this time around.

I tend to ask for day rate * 160 when the subject of contract to perm comes up. Their answer is always "Thanks but no thanks".

Perm salaries in this field tend to come in around the day rate * 130 mark.

I work between £400 and £600 per day on a contract rate and normally quote at the 60k mark when asked what permie salary I may consider working at. Not many permie roles will be paying more than 60-70k in the current climate.

I thought start high they can only work me down so asked for £80k-£85k plus bonus, permy role on open market would be for £65k-£70k They asked me to justify it so I did and provided all the calcs permy vs contract rate, they are considering it.

I thought about it alot last night and to be honest I don't think I could go back to permy, I just couldnt do it unless I had to and I don't have to, I like my freedom to much.

Agreed. But if it's permiedom or homelessness the choice is clear. Hopefully it would never come to that.

I've heard that several times from contractors, but why not just treat the perm role as a contract one and walk when you get bored?
