    Referral fee

I passed the name of a friend onto an agency a few months ago. Nothing mentioned that I can remember about referral fee and nothing in writing for me.

Agency called me 3 weeks ago about a role and I said I was in work. He said "thanks for referring xxxxxx : he got a role at yyyyy". I said "I know that as I keep in touch : pleased to help" then jokingly added "Was there a referral fee". He said yes : it will be £1000. I was a bit stunned and said "great". He said "times are very tough : will you accept £500". I thought I dont want to sue so said yes. He asked for 2 invoices : one when he started and one after a month. He said he would send 2 post dated cheques.

He sent an email saying he will pay £500. I sent invoices.

Last weekend I discovered my friend has an email saying the agency will pay a referral fee of £1000 from several months ago. He started work this week.

I sent a chaser email this week just asking if he had invoices : he said he did and would get round to them in due course.

Not quite sure how to play this. I dont particular want to sue. But I hate it when I am told something and then it does not happen. Parhaps I was stupid in accepting £500 : but I wanted to get money with minimum hassle.

    Any advice/tips for me?

    Thanks
    BP
