Did they sign your timesheet?

IANAL.

It all depends on the contract. If you were on an hourly/daily rate, and they signed timesheets to confirm that you had done the time worked, then there's nothing they can do.

If you were on a work package based contract, and they signed acceptance, then there's nothing they can do.

In any event, you don't have a contract with the client so they couldn't come after you even if they wanted. Not to say that the agency wouldn't, but unless there's something more to this than meets the eye I don't think anybody's got a leg to stand on. The authorised timesheet is key here (and, incidentally, is why I always prefer to have it done on paper than some fancy online system).

Speak to a Lawyer. Send them your contract and any communications you have with the client and get advice in terms of where you stand. Nobody here will be able to give you legal advice, and nobody can second guess your contract either.

Why is the client querying the hours and payment after the contract finished?

Was there something perculiar about the way the work was billed for ie after the work was done?

If they have signed a timesheet or sheets to say they were happy you did the hours \ work to standard, I dont see how they could have a leg to stand on.

I take it that the final invoice is yet to be paid and the agency will withhold pending payment by the client. Does happen, but they are on very shakey ground if you have correctly submitted a signed timesheet authorising all the hours you did. A signed timesheet is as good as cash to the agency.

If so the agency should pay you and the client pay the agency. If you did everything correctly there will be no problem, maybe just a delay.
