What rate can I get? Whats the market like? Oracle Apps DBA

    Hi All

I have started to consider moving from permie to a consulting role and I am wondering what the rates are like? and also what is the market for Apps DBAs like?

I am an Oracle Applications DBA with 4 years of experience. Usual stuff, upgrades, cloning, patching etc etc.

I would be looking for a contract in the South East or London.

So what sort of rate could I expect to earn?

    Cheers all

    Ben

depends which industry you're going to end up in

Rates for a Apps DBA with 4 years experience would go from as low as £270 a day (outside M25, public sector, no side skills required) to £450 a day (London bank/insurance, Apps DBA + things like Documentum, top UNIX scripting skills, Data Warehousing,....)

That's my own opinion, obviously, and I am not an agent but I have bee hanging around the Oracle world for a while.

That sounds not too bad. I have done some calculations and £350 - £400 per day would be what I would like.

I am a permie at the moment and strongly considering contracting as the way forward.

So how is the market for Apps DBAs at the the moment?

      Regards

      Ben

dunno - I haven't looked at the market for a while, I am currently in a nice little contract that seems to be like a rolling contract every 3 months or so.
Also I am just a standard DBA/Dev on Oracle, not apps - I know that Apps command a bit of a premium for rates, but I don't know whether the demand for them is higher than it is for plain standard Oracle DBAs.

So are there any good agencies worth registering with?

Well I don't know - depends how you look for jobs I guess. I usually go to job sites like jobserve and respond to any suitable ads, regardless of the agent.
I am sure other people do it differently and are more agency-focused in their approach but not me

              .

Hi there is work out there. Beccs got her contract in the midst of mini-boom and things quietend down a bit, and rates slipped a bit just recently. The market is definitely a bit "weird". Go for £400 upwards in the city, and don't be too disappointed if you find the interviews a bit slow coming in. I've ended up in an Investment bank in Switzerland earning f** all but hey that's how the cookie crumbles. At least I can see the alps form my bedroom window.

My only issue now is that I am on 4 weeks notice in my permie role. The couple of agencies that I have spoken to have said that they usually want people to start ASAP.

But my CV is out there!!

                  .

Be vague about when you can start. Get the job and then rethink. If you get offered a contract then usually you can bugger off a bit early. At least you would know it would be worth doing.

Quite a few companies will wait 4 weeks for a contractor.

                  Don't resign first.

I think that is going to be my plan. At the end of the day 4 weeks is not too long
