    Help wih Current Contract

    Hi,
I am currently six months into a year long contract with a publicly funded UK group. The contact role was originally pitched as being based around hands-on Windows Sever work but I have since been charged with project managing the implementation of a new email system.

Whilst the project management experience will look good on my CV it is taking an exorbitant amount of time to get anywhere due to the internal politics involved and I am finding myself spending most of my days sitting around doing nothing which after several months is driving me insane. Given the opportunity (and if anyone bothered listening to me!) I could have had the entire project easily completed by now.

Having discussed this with the management they can't find me anything else to do of any value and I'm considering the possibility moving on.

I was wondering if anyone had any comments?

You should post more on cuk to occupy your time.

Seriously - do you want to become a PM? Where do you want to end up? Thought about getting another gig?

I would like to eventually end up in PM but am quite happy working on the techie side of things at the moment.

I'm not really sure if this is normal in the contractual /PM world but it seems that any email I send that is related to anything vaguely important or anything I do needs to be run past the line manager I'm reporting into which is driving me crazy, it feels like being at school!

By the way, I hope you negotiated an increase in rate if they changed your role to a PM????

Today is my last day in my current contract. If you are looking to leave, can you pass on your work onto me please? .

To be honest, you shouldn't worry too much. As long as you can prove that you are doing as much as you can, you should be ok. Speak to the person you are reporting to (or whatever the IR35 compliant version is) and ask if there is a chance of your contract being extended beyond the year. If there is a chance of an extension, then you should use that to your advantage as you can ask for a pay rise. If you are looking for a hands on role, then be honest with the agency and ask them to find a more hands on role.
If your company is the best place to work in, for a mere £500 p/d, you can advertise here.

what result do you want from this discussion.

We can't provide you with any work, all we can do is suggest:

                  a) you should give notice and move on
                  b) you should think yourself lucky to have a contract and take the money.

Which answer do you want me to tell you is the right one?

                  tim

                    WHS.

There's also the possibility of taking a week off and getting PRINCE2 qualified or using your spare time to learn different PM methodologies like Agile.
