Also consider doing some WebSphere/IBM certification as there are a lot of places with big investments in the IBM stack and you can leverage your existing WebSphere experience. Some of the IBM certs you can do with self study and minimal outlay.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Ask specific questions that draw out opinionated answers, and insults. Then others will rudely disagree, and you'll get a balanced input.Comment

Basically we get a load of people asking "Should I go the contractor route?"
We just thought that the answer was obvious to anyone who has bothered to read the General forum.
And at the moment the answer is very much..
NO!!!!!
Newbie contractor's at drawing to the end of their first gig are running around like headless chickens and even experienced contractors are beginning to frown (a bit).
Stay where you are, at least until Spring when the picture will be clearer...."I can put any old tat in my sig, put quotes around it and attribute to someone of whom I've heard, to make it sound true."

Surely it's due to personal circumstance?
I am a n00b. Still permie but am very close to making the leap (3 interviews lined up in the next 7 days)
If the right role comes up...I'm going.

75% of contractor developers are sub-literate cretins, just like everyone else. i've seen numerous contractors turn up for gigs on day one clutching "Teach Yourself Them There Internets in 24 Hours For Feckless Dummies" and i've seen no evidence at all that contractors are more highly skilled than permies (much as i work hard to perpetuate that view with my clients)!Originally posted by BolshieBastardYou're fulfilling a business role not partaking in a rock and roll concert.Comment

Which is much easier to do than try to think of every permutation that someone can come up with that might include.
