WHile this happens quite a lot, its actually illegal to make somebody redundant just because they were the last in. The position needs to be made redundant, not the person.

You could always threaten them with legal action as they are chucking you out of the door!

Wasn't even mentioned at my 'Permie' interview - apart from "Must be challanging working with different projects and companies, we like people who enjoy a challange!"

Newbie - this isn't a slight slump, this is a big dip. If you have less than 3 years experience (or unable to blag said experience), consider perm roles for the interim.

Its illegal to target individuals for redundancy but if you're on the same rank as your fellows (e.g. "Consultant"), they can say they want to dispose of the least experienced (which just so happens to include the recently recruited).

I think perm salaries have gone down too as supply rises above demand there.

A few months ago in my contract I was offered a perm position with the company. I politely declined.
Now a few weeks ago they announced all the permies have to move 100 miles away to the new office, or take voluntary redundancy. I have been asked to stay on "to handle the relocation"

Moral of the story: Always be a contractor.

So, you do office removals as well.

I would rather sell my car, sell my television, and even sell my microwave before I went permie.

Remember in a recession you're not going to be looking at top-of-the-line blue chip permie roles on great greenfield projects. It's going to be maintenance projects for rubbish backwater firms, for rubbish money, with a sneering boss and boring colleagues.
                    Cats are evil.
